Indonesia Unveils Ambitious B60 Biodiesel Goal
Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has called for the country’s biodiesel program to move beyond the newly launched B50 mandate, setting an ambitious target of introducing B60 biodiesel by 2028. Speaking at the official launch of the mandatory B50 program in Karawang, West Java, on July 9, Prabowo stressed that Indonesia should not stop at a 50% biodiesel blend and should continue increasing the share of palm oil-based biofuel in the nation’s diesel supply.
The B50 program consists of a blend of 50% biodiesel derived from palm oil and 50% conventional diesel, while the proposed B60 standard would raise the biodiesel content to 60%. During the event, officials informed the president that B60 is expected to be ready for implementation in 2028.
Prabowo also urged universities, scientists, and researchers to continue developing advanced biofuel technologies to support higher blending mandates in the future. He thanked state-owned energy company Pertamina and all stakeholders involved in developing the B50 program.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia’s biodiesel initiative is the result of nearly two decades of consistent policy, beginning in 2008 under former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, continuing during President Joko Widodo’s administration, and now advancing under his government. He described the program as a national relay that demonstrates the importance of policy continuity. Prabowo added that expanding biodiesel production will not only strengthen Indonesia’s energy security and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, but also increase demand for domestic palm oil, benefiting millions of smallholder farmers and supporting the country’s broader economic development.
