HJHI Wins AIP Certification for Large-Scale Biofuel Container Ship
South Korean shipbuilder HJ Heavy Industries (HJHI) has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the Korean Register (KR) for the design of a 10,000-TEU biofuel-powered container vessel, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to support maritime decarbonization.
The certification was presented during the Posidonia 2026 international maritime exhibition in Athens, Greece. The project was developed in collaboration with KR and is based on a 10,000-TEU container ship currently under construction by HJHI.
Marine biofuels are produced by blending conventional marine fuels with renewable feedstocks such as used vegetable oils, animal fats, and other biological materials. These fuels can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while utilizing existing engine and fuel infrastructure, making them an attractive near-term solution for the shipping industry.
The development comes as global environmental regulations continue to tighten. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), the European Union’s FuelEU Maritime regulation, and the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) are increasing pressure on shipowners to lower carbon emissions and adopt cleaner fuels.
HJHI stated that the successful development and certification of its biofuel-powered container ship technology will strengthen its competitiveness in the growing market for environmentally friendly vessels. The company expects the achievement to support future sales and shipbuilding orders as demand for low-carbon shipping solutions continues to expand worldwide.
