Abra Group and Sumitomo Sign MoU to Advance JCM and Build Long-Term SAF Partnership

In Brazil, the Abra Group—formed by airlines such as GOL, Avianca, and Wamos Air—has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sumitomo Corporation do Brasil, the local subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, a leading global integrated trading company. The agreement aims to accelerate the development of industry solutions that support the decarbonization of the aviation sector.

Under the MoU, Abra, through GOL’s operations in Brazil, and Sumitomo will work with the Brazilian and Japanese governments to advance the implementation of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). The JCM is a framework established by the Japanese government under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement to finance decarbonization projects in partner countries.

The collaboration marks an initial step toward establishing a long-term sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply partnership between Abra and Sumitomo, supporting Brazil’s efforts to build a credible and scalable pathway toward lower-carbon aviation.
