Bangchak Launches Thailand’s First SAF Plant

May 19, 2026 · biofuels

Bangchak Corporation announced on May 18 that its first 100% HEFA-SPK (Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene) unit at the Bangchak Phra Khanong refinery has officially commenced commercial operations, becoming Thailand’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production project to reach commercial scale. The milestone marks a significant step forward in Thailand’s energy transition.

Bangchak stated that the project was built from the ground up with the goal of creating a world-class SAF production facility to support the aviation industry’s growing demand for low-carbon fuels. As global pressure to reduce aviation emissions intensifies, SAF is becoming a key focus for energy and transportation sectors worldwide. The launch of the facility also signals Thailand’s entry into the global next-generation aviation fuel supply chain.

Chaiwat Kovavisarach, Chief Executive Officer and President of Bangchak Group, said the company has not only developed the SAF plant but also established a complete ecosystem around used cooking oil (UCO), covering collection, feedstock management, and conversion into SAF and renewable diesel. He noted that this integrated approach will help strengthen Thailand’s energy security and long-term sustainability.

Bangchak plans to export its first batch of SAF products to international customers on May 19, including supply to the Singapore market. Industry observers believe the project will enhance Thailand’s position in the Asian SAF market while highlighting Southeast Asia’s accelerating investment in green aviation fuel development.
