Since Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation launched the “SAF Takeoff, Sustainable Flight” initiative in late April, officially marking the first year of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) development in Taiwan, China Airlines has actively advanced toward its net-zero emission goals. This year, the airline joined the SkyTeam Aviation Challenge (TAC) for the fourth time, operating a sustainable demonstration flight on its A350-900 fuel-efficient aircraft between Taoyuan and Bangkok (CI831/CI832), achieving a record-high SAF blending ratio of 40%.
For this milestone flight, China Airlines partnered with CPC Corporation Taiwan to supply about 7.7 tons of SAF blended at 40% for the Taoyuan–Bangkok route, while the return flight from Bangkok to Taoyuan sourced fuel from Thailand’s PTTOR, showcasing successful cross-border supply chain collaboration. The airline noted that SAF costs around two to three times more than conventional jet fuel but can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 80%. Currently, all flights departing from Taoyuan International Airport use 2–5% SAF, and China Airlines plans to gradually normalize SAF application.
To complement the sustainable flight, low-carbon catering and eco-friendly onboard designs were also introduced, including e-menus, reusable stainless-steel cutlery, rPET materials, FSC-certified paper cups, and biodegradable amenities—highlighting the airline’s commitment to green aviation transformation.
