Waste Plastics Enter SAF Market as UK Facility Begins Operations

April 26, 2026 · biofuels

In April 2026, the global sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector marked a significant step toward commercialization with the launch of a waste-plastics-to-SAF facility in the United Kingdom, reportedly operated by Clean Planet Technologies (CPTech).

The project is centered on CPTech’s proprietary Plastics-to-SAF (P2SAF) technology, which utilizes advanced chemical recycling processes to convert hard-to-recycle plastic waste into low-carbon aviation fuel. This development highlights the growing role of non-biogenic feedstocks in SAF production and signals progress beyond the industry’s heavy reliance on hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathways derived from waste oils and fats.

With the facility entering operation, greater visibility is emerging around the cost structure and potential pricing benchmarks of plastic-derived SAF. For an aviation sector under increasing pressure to decarbonize, this pathway offers not only feedstock diversification but also a potential circular solution to plastic waste management.

While still at an early stage of scale-up, such projects demonstrate how waste-based chemical recycling could evolve into a commercially relevant SAF supply route, supporting the broader industry ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
