According to The Bioenergy Times, a senior official from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) confirmed that India will join the global alliance of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producers by the end of this year. Jane Hupe, Deputy Director of the ICAO Air Transport Bureau’s Environment Unit, said India is emerging as “a key player in the global transition to green aviation energy.”
India is preparing to launch SAF production through hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA), with the first supplies expected from Indian Oil’s Panipat refinery ahead of the country’s blending mandate taking effect in 2027.
An ICAO study under its global ACT-SAF program highlighted India’s abundant feedstocks and supportive policies, suggesting the nation is well-positioned not only to meet domestic demand but also to become a future exporter of SAF.
