Ningbo-Zhoushan Port Becomes China’s Largest Marine Biofuel Bunkering Hub
In 2025, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, China, reached a major milestone as its bonded marine biofuel bunkering volume surpassed 60,000 tonnes for the first time, making it the largest biofuel bunkering port in the country. As global shipping accelerates toward net-zero emissions, the capability to supply green marine fuels has become a key indicator of competitiveness for international hub ports. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has advanced conventional fuel supply stability and green fuel innovation in parallel, steadily building a bonded bunkering service system characterized by optimal service quality, high efficiency, and competitive costs.
Reviewing the development of its biofuel bunkering business in 2025, the port achieved a leap from a standing start to an industry-leading position in China. On March 15, it successfully completed East China’s first bonded bunkering operation of high-sulfur biofuel oil at the Chuanshan port area, marking a breakthrough in green marine fuel services. By closely aligning with shipping companies’ decarbonization needs, the port rapidly established a green energy supply framework. On July 16, it set a new domestic record for the largest single biofuel bunkering operation, with nearly 5,700 tonnes supplied to one vessel.
Supported by smart customs systems and streamlined paperless approvals, vessel turnaround times have been significantly reduced, ensuring smooth operations from berthing and bunkering to departure. These coordinated efforts are accelerating Ningbo-Zhoushan Port’s transformation into a preferred clean marine energy bunkering hub in China and beyond.
