EWABA calls for higher biodiesel blending to reduce fuel costs
Amid soaring diesel prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions, the European Waste-based and Advanced Biofuels Association (EWABA) has issued a strong warning: Europe is running out of time to shield households and businesses from rising fuel and living costs.
EWABA argues that a practical and immediate solution already exists—raising biodiesel blending mandates. Europe has sufficient capacity to produce large volumes of sustainable biodiesel, primarily from waste-based feedstocks such as used cooking oil. However, outdated policy caps and regulatory barriers continue to limit its deployment.
Since diesel is essential for transporting food, medicine, and other critical goods, price spikes quickly translate into broader inflation and supply chain stress. EWABA is therefore urging policymakers to act swiftly by allowing higher blends such as B10 for passenger vehicles, expanding use in heavy-duty transport, and introducing temporary tax incentives.
Increasing biodiesel use could deliver rapid benefits, including lower fuel prices, reduced reliance on volatile fossil fuel imports, and up to 90% greenhouse gas emissions reduction compared to conventional diesel, while strengthening Europe’s domestic biofuel industry.
