Pertamina Advances UCO-to-SAF Project in Indonesia
Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina signed a cooperation agreement with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) on May 7 to convert used cooking oil (UCO) generated from the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Under the agreement, waste cooking oil collected from nutrition service units (SPPG) will be processed into SAF, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), and bio-gasoline. The initiative is part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to strengthen domestic energy security, support circular economy development, and advance its net-zero emissions goals.
BGN stated that the MBG program currently benefits around 61.99 million people across Indonesia. Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said the collaboration combines the country’s food and energy agendas by turning household waste into valuable low-carbon fuel resources.
Pertamina aims to gradually increase SAF blending levels to 1%–5% by 2030, supporting Indonesia’s transition toward cleaner aviation fuels and sustainable energy development.
