SAF Production Still Falls Short of Expectations, Says IAT

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned that global sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production remains well below the level needed to support the aviation industry’s decarbonization goals. Despite growing investments and numerous project announcements, actual output growth has been slower than expected.

IATA estimates that global SAF production will reach around 2.4 million tonnes in 2026, accounting for less than 1% of total aviation fuel consumption. The association noted that limited feedstock availability, high production costs, and delays in project development continue to constrain supply.

While airlines are eager to increase SAF usage to reduce carbon emissions, the current price of SAF remains significantly higher than conventional jet fuel. Industry leaders believe stronger government support, including incentives and blending mandates, will be essential to accelerate production and close the supply gap.

As demand for low-carbon aviation fuels continues to rise worldwide, expanding SAF production remains one of the industry’s biggest challenges.
