Alfanar Secures Land Agreement for Major UK SAF Project

July 2, 2026 · biofuels

Alfanar Group has reached a key milestone for its Lighthouse Green Fuels (LGF) project after securing a land option agreement for the planned sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility at Seal Sands in Teesside, UK.

The project is expected to become one of the world’s largest SAF plants and the UK’s first commercial-scale refinery built since the 1960s. Once operational, the facility will produce 180 million liters of SAF and 30 million liters of renewable naphtha annually using sustainable biomass feedstocks, including forestry and agricultural residues.

The project will also integrate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, enabling the production of carbon-negative fuel with lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions more than 200% lower than conventional jet fuel.

LGF has entered the advanced development stage, with front-end engineering design (FEED) completed and all key technology licenses secured. Planning and environmental approvals are progressing through the UK’s Development Consent Order process.

Alfanar has already invested around £90 million in the project and expects to invest a further £100 million before making a final investment decision by the end of 2027. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, followed by commissioning in 2031 and full commercial operations in 2032. The project is expected to strengthen the UK’s SAF production capacity, improve energy security, and create high-skilled jobs in the Teesside region.
