China’s Hainan Completes First Marine Biodiesel Bunkering Operation

On 27 July at 3:00 p.m., China’s Hainan Province completed its first-ever marine biodiesel bunkering operation at Berth No. 2 of Basuo Port in Dongfang, marking a major milestone in the province’s transition toward cleaner shipping fuels.

The operation’s biggest highlight was its “drop-in” capability: the vessel was able to use biodiesel as a direct replacement for conventional marine fuel without requiring any engine modifications, providing a cost-effective and efficient solution for reducing carbon emissions in the shipping sector.

Compared with conventional marine fuels, biodiesel significantly reduces sulfur oxide (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions while delivering substantial life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. Black carbon emissions are virtually eliminated, further enhancing its environmental benefits.

The Basuo Maritime Safety Administration supervised the entire bunkering operation, ensuring zero safety incidents, zero accidents, and zero pollution throughout the process.

The successful bunkering marks a significant breakthrough in the application of clean marine fuels in China’s Hainan Province. Looking ahead, Hainan plans to accelerate the large-scale deployment of alternative marine fuels, including biodiesel and green methanol, with the goal of establishing three marine biofuel bunkering facilities by 2027.
