Delta Celebrates Completion of 30-Million-Gallon SAF Blending Facility

Delta Air Lines has celebrated the completion of a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blending facility at Flint Hills Resources’ Pine Bend Refinery in Minnesota, marking a significant milestone in expanding SAF supply for Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), the airline’s second-largest hub.

The new facility can blend up to 30 million gallons of neat SAF annually with conventional jet fuel before delivering it directly to MSP through existing pipeline infrastructure. Delta consumes approximately 250 million gallons of jet fuel each year at the airport, making the project an important step toward increasing SAF use at one of its largest operations.

The blending facility is a key milestone of the Minnesota SAF Hub, a coalition launched in 2023 to build a regional SAF economy. Delta said the investment supports broader adoption of SAF by strengthening critical fuel infrastructure, while helping advance its goal of sourcing 10% of its jet fuel from SAF by 2030. The airline continues to view SAF as one of the most effective solutions for reducing aviation emissions and achieving its long-term net-zero emissions target by 2050.
