Honduras Eyes Brazilian Investment in Soybean Production and Biodiesel Plant

October 9, 2026 · biofuels

Honduras is exploring a potential partnership with Brazilian biofuel company Be8 to develop commercial soybean production and establish a biodiesel plant, aiming to reduce import dependence, diversify agriculture, and expand its renewable energy sector.

The discussions involve Honduras’ Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), local agricultural producers, and Be8. Company CEO Erasmo Carlos Battistella met with President Nasry Asfura to discuss investment opportunities in the agricultural and energy sectors.

According to figures presented during the meetings, Honduras imports more than 400,000 tonnes of soybean meal annually, primarily for animal feed. Developing domestic soybean cultivation could replace part of these imports while creating new opportunities for agricultural processing and biofuel production.

Agricultural officials and local producers have expressed interest in establishing a commercial soybean supply chain capable of supporting a future biodiesel facility. Soybeans could also be incorporated into crop rotation systems, complementing existing maize and rice production.

Be8 believes the initiative could strengthen agribusiness, generate employment, and support the long-term expansion of renewable fuels in Honduras.

However, the proposal remains at the discussion stage. Investment amounts, production capacity, construction timelines, and the project’s feedstock requirements have not yet been disclosed. If implemented, the initiative could establish an integrated value chain spanning soybean cultivation, processing, animal feed, and biodiesel production.
