CMA CGM and DHL Global Forwarding Launch UCOME-Powered Low-Carbon Container Shipping
French container shipping group CMA CGM and DHL Global Forwarding have signed an agreement to offer lower-carbon container shipping services powered by biofuels derived from used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME). Under the partnership, the two companies will use around 8,990 tonnes of UCOME, which is expected to cut lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions by approximately 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
The service will be delivered through CMA CGM’s ACT+ low-carbon transport solution and DHL Global Forwarding’s GoGreen Plus program. Both products allow customers to voluntarily reduce the carbon footprint of their shipments by paying a premium for greener transport options.
CMA CGM confirmed that biofuel will be physically bunkered across its fleet, ensuring that the claimed emission reductions are fully aligned with DHL’s booking and carbon accounting methodology. DHL Global Forwarding’s head of ocean freight, Casper Ellerbaek, described the cooperation as another milestone toward building low-carbon supply chains.
CMA CGM shipping executive vice president Olivier Nivoix said the agreement demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate the transition to low-carbon shipping. Since 2008, CMA CGM has reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping operations by 57% and continues to invest heavily in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels.
