American Airlines and Google Sign Record SAF Agreement

June 10, 2026 · biofuels

American Airlines announced on June 9 that it has signed a record-breaking sustainable aviation fuel certificate (SAFc) agreement with Google, the largest publicly disclosed SAFc deal between an airline and a single corporate customer.

The three-year agreement will support the use of 35 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), delivering nearly 300,000 metric tons of CO2-equivalent emissions reductions. The SAF will be supplied to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and produced from waste-based feedstocks, including used cooking oil (UCO).

Through the SAFc Registry’s book-and-claim system, Google will receive the environmental benefits associated with the fuel to help address emissions from employee business travel. The long-term commitment also enabled American Airlines to secure additional SAF supply agreements, supporting the growth of the SAF market.

Both companies emphasized that stronger corporate demand is essential for attracting investment and expanding SAF production. Supported by Illinois’ SAF tax credit program, the agreement highlights the growing role of corporate partnerships in accelerating aviation decarbonization and scaling sustainable aviation fuel adoption.
