China Commissions Its Largest Domestically Developed Biodiesel and SAF Unit

On December 15, Blue Whale Bioenergy (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd., invested by Wuchan Zhongda Chemical Group Co., Ltd., successfully started up its 500,000-tonne-per-year industrial oil–to–biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project.

Established in November 2023, Blue Whale Bioenergy actively supports China’s national “dual-carbon” strategy. The company invested in the construction of a new facility with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes, producing biodiesel and SAF from industrial-grade oils. This project is the first hydrocarbon-based biodiesel and SAF plant in Zhejiang Province.

With a total investment of RMB 2.2 billion, the project was completed after 20 months of construction. Its successful commissioning marks the deployment of China’s largest domestically developed biodiesel and SAF unit based on independent intellectual property, representing a significant milestone for the industry.

The project is expected to provide strong momentum for the sustainable development of China’s biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel sectors, supporting both emissions reduction goals and the advancement of domestic renewable fuel technologies.
