Egypt Set to Host One of Africa’s First Commercial SAF Facilities
Axens has announced a collaboration with Green Sky Capital to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Egypt with an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes. The project is expected to become the first SAF production plant in Egypt and one of the first large-scale SAF facilities in Africa.
The plant will use lipid-based feedstocks, including used cooking oil (UCO), and will apply Axens’ Vegan® hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) technology to produce low-carbon aviation fuel. Production is targeted to begin by the end of 2027.
As part of the partnership, Axens will provide its proprietary technology, catalysts, adsorbents, operational support, and training services. The two companies have also signed a broader memorandum of understanding to further optimize the project and improve SAF yields.
The development supports Egypt’s energy transition goals and could strengthen the country’s position as a renewable fuels hub serving both Mediterranean and African markets, while contributing to the aviation sector’s decarbonization efforts.
