Palm oil prices hit 31-month high

Malaysia, the world’s second largest exporter of crude palm oil, posted its highest oil price since March 2022 on 5 November. The price soared to $1,146 per metric tonne. This represents an increase of 44 per cent year-to-date and 32 per cent year-on-year.

Philippines strengthens monitoring of compliance of 3 per cent coconut biodiesel blends

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) on Friday said it will implement tougher monitoring to ensure that all diesel fuel in the country meets the standard of 3 per cent coconut methyl ester (CME) blends.

The Office of Survey Management (OSM) will conduct inspections to ensure a seamless transition to higher biodiesel blends.

Violators may face fines of up to PhP200,000 for non-compliance, which will be considered adulteration, while repeat offenders may be fined up to PhP300,000 and may have their certification or registration revoked.

The DOE then emphasised the need for a three-phase increase in biofuel blends, which would benefit the environment, green job creation, the coconut industry, fuel efficiency and savings.

A 3 per cent increase in the price of CME blends is the first phase; this will be followed by an increase to 4 to 5 per cent by October 2025 and October 2026, respectively.

Thailand cuts palm oil content in biodiesel to curb rising costs

In the face of rising palm oil prices, the Department of Energy will reduce the amount of palm oil used in biodiesel fuel from B7 biodiesel to B5 biodiesel starting 21 November.

B7 is a blend of 7 per cent palm biodiesel and 93 per cent petroleum diesel, while B5 contains 5 per cent palm biodiesel.

Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said the move, which was approved at a meeting of the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) on Thursday, was expected to help reduce the cost of biodiesel.

Delta flights use SAF

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) for use on Delta flights.

More than 7,000 gallons of SAF were delivered directly to DTW this week through an existing pipeline, thanks to the cooperation of many partners.

The SAF was initially transported by Shell from Montana Renewables, the largest producer of SAF in North America, to the Buckeye Partners plant in Dearborn, Michigan.

B50 PLAM OIL

B50 program requires 18.4 million tons of crude palm oil per year

According to Palm Oil Journal, Indonesia estimates that if the biodiesel blend ratio is increased to 50%, annual crude palm oil consumption will increase to 2 billion liters (18.4 million tons), compared to 1.34 billion liters (12.328 million tons) under the current B35 program. By January 2025, the blending ratio will reach 40%.

Currently, domestic production is only 1.67-17 billion liters (14.72-15.64 million tons), so a significant increase in production will be needed to achieve the B50 plan.

ICAO partners with banks to promote SAF

On 24-25 October, the Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Juan Carlos Salazar, met with senior officials from the multilateral development banks in Washington, DC, to explore how sustainable aviation investments can be facilitated through the ICAO’s Finvest Hub in support of decarbonisation projects, particularly sustainable aviation initiatives in developing countries.

During the meeting, participants focussed on the production and supply chain challenges faced by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as well as its high cost compared to traditional aviation fuels.

According to ICAO’s LTAG report, about $32 billion is needed to expand SAF production by 2050, highlighting the importance of multi-party collaboration. U.S. Department of Transportation official Anne Petersenk highlighted the global vision of cleaner aviation fuels by 2030 during the roundtable. In addition, Salazar met with senior executives from the U.S. and major financial institutions to promote ICAO’s transformation.

Gulfstream Completes SAF Zero Sulphur Emissions Testing

Gulfstream announced on 31 October that it has successfully completed ground emissions testing of 100 percent pure sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with zero sulphur content on the new Gulfstream G700 aircraft.

The G700, powered by a Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engine, underwent ground emissions testing to measure multiple fuel types, including a 30/70 SAF blend and pure SAF.

The preliminary results of these tests will provide guidance to the industry to further reduce the overall climate impact of business aviation.

BCL Industries is building a biodiesel plant

India’s BCL Industries is setting up a 75 KLPD biodiesel plant in Bathinda, Punjab.

The construction of the 75 KLPD biodiesel plant at Bathinda is in full swing and once completed, it will facilitate complete vertical integration of ethanol production and add value.

The plant will be commissioned in April or May next year. The company has also obtained a similar license in Kharagpur and is awaiting approvals.
